In 2008 in the United States, 34,017 individuals lost their lives in traffic accidents. 19,220 drivers lost their lives. 7,397 passengers were killed. 5,290 motorcyclists were killed. 4,378 pedestrians were killed along with 716 cyclists. There were 6 million car accidents in the United States last year. Car accidents are the leading cause of deaths of individuals between the age of 2 and 34. Excessive speed is the second most common cause of deadly accidents at 30 percent. The auto accidents cost $164.2 billion each year. 2.35 million people were injured in 2008 from car crashes.
